I recently lost my door key card for the fire department on a chimney fire. We searched all over the place and couldn’t find my card. Assuming I had lost it on scene I called the person in charge of the door cards to tell them I had lost mine and needed a new one. That was until I had a letter addressed to me on the desk in the office, I opened it up and there sat my card with a note saying...

be fast but don't hurry →
beneaththehelmet: Sometimes we get in a rush upon arrival at the scene; adrenalin and excitement get the best of us on occasion.  If we train ourselves to work through a process of taking in information while taking action, following steps such as those mentioned in this piece will provide us with a greater chance of success.

SFFD Releases Report On Diamond Heights Fire That... →
hoosi3r: A flare-up fueled by a broken window caused the deaths of two firefighters in a Diamond Heights house fire last year, and not procedural errors, San Francisco fire officials said today. An internal safety investigation on the June 2, 2011 fire at 133 Berkeley Way released today indicates that firefighters Lt. Vincent A. Perez and Firefighter Paramedic Anthony M. Valerio were killed by...

Honor Duty Service: Brotherhood →
honordutyservice: I’ve noticed, perhaps subconsciously, a major difference between the communities of firefighters, EMTs, police, and military personell. When an accountant passes away, his funeral is attended by family and friends. When a firefighter passes away (in the line of duty or not) his funeral is attended…

don't let 'em hold you back →
beneaththehelmet: This post at The Tailboard reminds us that we shouldn’t get in a rut or fail to open our eyes simply because of what we’re used to.  We all have something left to learn; we just have to find out how to learn it.

jillweeann asked: A rookie has to learn in some way or another. Gotta make mistakes to learn from them. But I agree. Everyone should know their equipment. I went on a clinical once and my preceptor didn't know half of the shit that was in the bag and I, as an EMT student, seemed to know more than him. Pretty sad.

Note to any rookie.
Know your equipment, so if by any chance somebody elses stuff ends up on your engine on a call, I don’t have to call all over the county to try and find it because you aren’t sure if its your fire departments or not. If you knew your equipment you’d easily recognize that heyyy something doesn’t belong here.

firesandfarming asked: I'm only 16, so obviously I'm exterior only. But I'm lucky enough to be at a station that realizes that kids like me will one day be interior firefighters, so they let us do as much as they're allowed, and train with us on more interior stuff than some stations I've seen. Anyways, I wanted to tell you that this is an awesome blog. It's sort of like an online training...
